Questions
How are words counted?
The same way word processors like Microsoft Word and Google Docs count them: anything between spaces that contains a letter or number is one word. Hyphenated words like "well-known" and contractions like "don't" count once, and stray punctuation such as a lone dash doesn't count at all. Chinese, Japanese and Thai, which aren't written with spaces, are split into dictionary words instead.
How is reading time estimated?
It divides the word count by 238 words per minute, the average silent reading speed for adults found across almost 200 studies. Speaking time uses 140 words per minute, a comfortable pace for a talk or presentation. Technical text, or text read aloud slowly, will take longer.
Do emoji and accented letters count as one character?
Yes. Characters are counted as you see them, so an emoji, a flag or a letter with an accent each count as one, even when they're stored as several code points. Some platforms count differently: X counts most emoji and links as more than one character, and an SMS with emoji or non-Latin letters fits only 70 characters.
What counts as a paragraph?
Each line that contains text. Blank lines between paragraphs are ignored, so it works whether you separate paragraphs with one line break or two.
Is my text saved or uploaded?
No. Counting happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere or stored, and the text is gone when you close the tab.
